Devon Conway smashed an unbeaten 136 on debut in the first Test against England at Lord’s. He admitted that he feels surreal at the moment and couldn’t have dreamt of a better start to his Test career.
The South African-born moved to New Zealand in his mid-20s to pursue his dream of playing cricket and make a mark as a cricketer. The left-hander scored a plethora of runs in domestic cricket before completing his three-year waiting period and finally making his New Zealand debut.
Conway made his T20I and ODI debut across the NZ 2020-21 summer and scored big runs. In 14 T20Is, he amassed 473 runs at an average of 59.12 and a strike-rate of 151.11. He made his ODI debut in March earlier this year and scored 225 runs in three ODIs, including a ton and a fifty.
Now, he has gone on to smash a memorable Test ton on debut. Conway made an unbeaten 136 as he helped the Kiwis drive home the advantage on the first day of this first Test at Lord’s. The 29-year-old admitted that it was a ‘surreal moment’ and he couldn’t have asked for a better start to his Test career.
“It was a pretty surreal moment, I couldn’t have dreamed for a better start to my Test career,”
he was quoted saying after the first day’s play at Lord’s.
Moreover, Conway revealed that when the team arrived at Lord’s, he asked Kane Williamson about his feeling on having scored a ton at Lord’s and having his name up on the honours board.
“When we arrived at Lord’s a couple days ago, we walked into the changing room and got the opportunity to have a look at the all the legends and the names up on that honours board.
Funny enough I had a conversation with Kane asking what it feels like to see your name on that board [for Williamson’s hundred at Lord’s in 2015], and the first thing he said when I went up into the changing room was ‘Now you know what it’s like, bro’,”
Conway further added.
