With less than a month left on the Argentine’s contract, it is understood that the negotiations over a new deal have begun, and the atmosphere surrounding the situation is optimistic.
The official Barcelona website has covered the press conference of club president Joan Laporta. Speaking about the Messi situation, the chairman mentioned that the talks for an extension are underway but are not done yet.
Having said that, the president stated that he expects the 33-year-old to stay at the club:
“We have made an offer within Barça’s capabilities. It’s clear Leo deserves more and he could get more but I think he want to keep improving with Barça and he is excited about staying and the project.”
Talking about the proposal made to Messi, the two-time president said:
“I have always said that with Messi is not about money but that he sees a team that has the chance to win trophies. If you ask for my feeling, I would say I am moderately optimistic. He knows the important effort we are making.”
It is understood that Messi might be open to a pay-cut, given the current financial situation of the Catalan giants and to help fund some big-money transfers as the club has been linked with Erling Haaland in recent times.
