Cesc Fabregas, formerly of Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea, and AS Monaco, is closing in on a surprise switch to Serie B side Como 1907. The Spaniard, 35, has been without a club since leaving the Ligue 1 club at the end of the 2021/22 season.
As per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Fabregas has reached a verbal agreement with Como on a two-year contract, which will run until the end of the 2023/24 season. He is scheduled to fly to Lombardy in August, when he will officially sign his new contract and join the club chaired by the former Chelsea and England stalwart Dennis Wise.
Fabregas will link up with compatriot Alex Blanco – who joined the club after graduating from the Valencia CF academy – and former Juventus forward Alberto Cerri at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
The playmaker enters the twilight of his playing career following a storied journey that took him to England from Spain as a teenager, back to Spain as an established international star, and again to England as a player looking to revitalize his career.
He joined Arsenal as a youth product from FC Barcelona’s infamous La Masia academy in 2003 and found himself a part of the first team as quickly as he had arrived. In time, the Spaniard grew in importance, eventually taking the captain’s armband from the departed William Gallas, and leading his side through a difficult period under the then-manager Arsene Wenger.
Fabregas returned to the Camp Nou in 2011 in a 30 million euro deal but found himself a part of an incredible side rather than the face of one. The three years he spent in his native Spain were fruitful, as they brought the league title, but Fabregas returned to England in 2014 to sign for Chelsea in a stunning swoop. With the Blues, the midfielder won two more titles before leaving for AS Monaco in the January of 2019.
