Barcelona’s president Laporta revealed that he’s confident the Argentine will sign a new contract and that “everything is progressing adequately” between the two parties.
Messi, whose contract expires on June 30th, had wished to leave the club last summer. That decision inspired one of the biggest transfer speculation ever seen in a window as a reunion with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City was inevitable at some stage.
But in a twist of events, the Barca legend chose to stay at his beloved club, refusing to take them to court. Shortly after, the club’s financial crisis came to light, and subsequent other problems led to the resignation of former president Josep Bartomeu. Laporta was re-elected in March and he promised to keep the all time great at Camp Nou.
“I will do everything within the club’s capabilities to get him to stay. That’s what we’re doing. Messi is motivated. Everything is progressing adequately. He is an extraordinary person and I am convinced that he will want to continue at Barca.”
he stated.
Amid interests from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, the six-time Balon D’or winner has been leading his team from the front for the 17th season in a row.
The 33-year-old has scored 29 times, adding another 13 through assists in Barca’s 39 matches in all competitions so far. Messi, inevitably the top scorer of La Liga (23 goals) is four ahead of second-placed Karim Benzema.
“I have nothing clear until the end of the year, I will wait for the end of the season.
The important thing is to think about the team, finish the year, think about trying to get titles and not be distracted by other things.
I don’t know if I’m going to leave or not and if I leave, I would like to leave in the best way.”
said Messi.
