The defender’s contract negotiations went from being extremely complicated to completely broken down, reports ARA. FC Barcelona are no longer interested in extending his services, and the Spaniard has informed his agents to seek a new team.
A few months before, there was considerable optimism surrounding his renewal, and it only seemed to be a matter of time before that would eventually happen. Club president Joan Laporta had also previously stated that principles of the new deal had been agreed upon, but ARA reports that talks have completely stopped, and Barcelona is in no mood for a fresh round of negotiations.
The beginning of the end started in September 2021 when Barcelona offered Roberto a new two-year deal. The talks froze because the player and the club were distant on the terms of salary reduction. He had reportedly agreed to a reduction of 30%, but the club stressed on a minimum of 40% wage reduction.
Although manager Xavi was keen to retain the player, his future at the club now lies elsewhere. The 30-year-old is keen on seeking a move to the Premier League and has ruled out moves to MLS or Qatar.
There are no ‘firm offers’ for the Spaniard, but there are teams that are interested in acquiring his services, and Arsenal are also said to be on the list.
A La Masia product, Roberto is currently recuperating on the sidelines following an injury. He has made well over 300 appearances for the club, and despite never being considered a star, his versatility and adaptability has been crucial assets for the Catalan side.
Barcelona now seem to be focused on rebuilding their squad around youngsters like Pedri, Ansu Fati, Gavi and Ferran Torres, among others.
