A 94th-minute goal helped minnows Mura beat Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa Conference League. Meanwhile, in the Europa League, West Ham United and Leicester City eased to wins against Rapid Wien and Legia Warsaw, respectively.
Tottenham suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Slovenian side NS Mura, who beat ten-man Spurs 2-1 at home, leaving them in a precarious position ahead of the final group stage matchday. The Premier League outfit needs to match – or better – Vitesse’s result on matchday 6 to progress to the next round.
Tomi Horvat gave Mura the lead in the 11th minute with a sensational curled effort from the right side of the box. To make matters worse for Spurs, Ryan Sessegnon received his marching orders from the referee in the 31st minute for his second bookable offense.
Nonetheless, Conte’s side kept itself in the game and found a way back through Harry Kane in the 72nd minute; the striker lifted the ball over the goalkeeper from a tight angle to level the scores.
However, Spurs with too many men committed forward left wide open spaces at the back – a situation Amadej Marosa exploited in the 94th minute. He ran in behind the defense, cut inside, and took a shot at the goal, which deflected off of Davinson Sanchez and looped over Pierluigi Gollini into the net.
Meanwhile, in the UEFA Europa League, Leicester City and West Ham United recorded easy wins over their respective opponents. The Foxes beat Legia Warsaw 3-1 thanks to first-half strikes from Patson Daka, James Maddison, and Wilfred Ndidi.
Legia looked to have found their way back into the game when Filip Mladenovic scored from the rebound of Mahir Emreli’s saved spot-kick, but Ndidi – who had conceded the penalty – put the game beyond doubt with a headed goal from a corner just past the half-hour mark.
The Hammers similarly cruised to a comfortable win over Rapid Wien thanks to Andriy Yarmolenko’s brilliance. The Ukrainian attacker scored the game’s opening goal in the 39th minute with a header off a Nikola Vlasic cross.
Later in the first half, he won a penalty that was converted by Mark Noble. Unbeaten in the competition, David Moyes’ side confirmed their progression to the next round as group winners.
