The Argentine was recently sidelined for three months due to suffering from cardiovascular arrhythmia. However, his estimated time out of action could be far greater than previously imagined.
Sergio Aguero joined FC Barcelona this summer on a free transfer after leaving Manchester City with a cabinet full of trophies. The Argentine was initially sidelined due to an injury but returned to action in October, and scored a last-minute goal in the El Clasico against Real Madrid (1-2). However, later in the month, during a league game against Alaves, the veteran forward left the pitch complaining of chest pains, which was later diagnosed as cardiovascular arrhythmia.
Aguero subsequently received treatment and was ruled out of action for three months. However, recent reports from Catalunya Radio claim that his condition could be far worse than previously imagined, his issue so serious that doctors have suggested an early retirement.
It is believed that the 33-year-old will undergo several tests and will be continuously monitored in the coming months before he and his camp decide on an involuntary retirement.
Barcelona remain tight-lipped at the moment, with Sports reporting that the club does not intend to take a call on the player until the end of his initial spell on the sidelines, which is expected to last three months. Furthermore, ESPN reports that Aguero, like Barcelona, won’t rush to a decision until he reaches the end of his primary recovery period.
Aguero’s cardiac irregularity was the first scare for the Blaugrana, but the club received another last week when women’s team player Caroline Graham Hansen was also required to undergo tests. However, initial scans played down the severity of Hansen’s condition, and she is expected to re-join training in the coming days.
Aguero’s condition is also the second high-profile case of a similar ilk to come to light in recent months. Whilst representing Denmark at the Euros, Inter Milan midfielder Christian Eriksen also suffered from heart problems and had to be administered CPR on the pitch, before being taken to a hospital. The Dane has remained on the sidelines since, but is yet to reach a conclusive decision over his playing career.
