Paris Saint-Germain survived a late onslaught by Brest to win 4-2. Meanwhile, Dominik Szoboszlai scored two stunning goals as RB Leipzig beat VfB Stuttgart in the battle of the American tacticians.
In Ligue 1, PSG took on Stade Brestois in the Friday night fixture. Gianluigi Donnarumma – one of the four free arrivals this summer, only made the bench – while Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos missed out completely.
The Parisiens, nonetheless, raced out of the blocks and took the lead with them into the break, after a dominant first half during which Ander Herrera and Kylian Mbappe scored for the visitors. Frank Honorat, however, managed to make it 2-1 just before the interval.
Idrissa Gueye restored PSG’s two-goal cushion in the 73rd minute, but that too didn’t last for long. Brest cut the deficit to just one for the second time in the match through former Huddersfield Town striker Steve Mounie.
Nevertheless, Angel Di Maria put an end to the hopes of a Brest comeback in the 90th minute, with the fourth Paris goal.
A Dominik Szoboszlai brace helped RB Leipzig defeat VfB Stuttgart to secure their first win of the season. Szoboszlai scored either side of the break, while goals from Emil Forsberg and Andre Silva completed a comfortable outing for Die Roten Bullen.
Jesse Marsch was in the Leipzig dugout for only his third competitive match. His first – a DfB Pokal first-round fixture – had ended in a 4-0 win, while he lost his second to Mainz 05 in the league.
Marsch’s team dominated on the night, hoarding the majority of the possession while attempting more than twice as many shots as their opponents. The goals came from Szoboszlai either side of the break.
Both wonderfully hit strikes from a distance which left goalkeeper Florian Muller with no chance. Captain Forsberg got his name on the team sheet, finishing an excellent team move just second after the restart, while summer signing Silva scored from the spot five minutes past the hour.
