Barcelona are currently in a financial mess but president Joan Laporta and his team are convinced that they will be able to solve the issue that is currently staring them in the face before the start of the new La Liga season, which is less than three weeks away.
Barcelona’s sky-high wage bill has come to haunt them as the cules are facing difficulties in registering their all-important signing in Lionel Messi. Messi, 34, is technically a free agent as it stands, but the Argentine is said to have reached personal terms with Barcelona as he looks to continue his one-club run.
What Barcelona need to do is to offload a few of their high earners in Antoine Griezmann, Samuel Umtiti, and Miralem Pjanic.
The Blaugrana are believed to be on the lookout for potential suitors for Pjanic and Umtiti while the future of Griezmann still remains under doubt, even though the Frenchman is open to the idea of continuing at Barca.
Barcelona, though, haven’t stopped planning for the next season as the former La Liga champions have been linked with a defensive target in Christian Romero of Atalanta.
The links have been solid with some reports claiming that Barcelona, being aware of their current financial situation, were close to exploring the idea of signing Romero on a loan move with the idea of buying him at the end of the loan tenure.
The rumors however have been quashed by the journalist, Fabrizio Romano.
Romano, on Twitter, confirmed that Barcelona have not entered the frame for Romero and as it stands, Tottenham are in the pole position to sign the 23-year-old.
Tottenham are still the only club leading the race for Cristian Romero. Talks ongoing with Atalanta to reach an agreement, work in progress tonight/today too. Personal terms agreed. #THFC Barcelona have not made any official/verbal bid as they’ve different priorities.
It is clear that Barcelona are currently focusing on registering Messi with the La Liga before making in new signings, although it looks highly doubtful that they would be in a position to make any more signings after completing the 34-year-old’s registration process with none of the players in the Barca ranks inclined to leave this summer.
