The veteran pacer achieved the great milestone, playing for Lancashire in the ongoing County Championship against Kent at the Old Trafford ground in Manchester.
As he dismissed Kent batsman Heino Kuhn, James Anderson registered scalp No.1000 for himself, which is the highest for any active bowler in first-class cricket.
Still going as strong as ever, the excellent swing and seam bowler also got the better of Zak Crawley, Jordon Cox, Oliver Robinson, Jack Leaning, Matt Milnes and Harry Podmore through his remarkable spell of 7/19. Running through the Kent batting line-up, Anderson helped Lancashire bundle out the opposition for a score of just 74.
Anderson now has 1002 first-class wickets to his name at an average of a shade over 24. The devastating spell against Kent was the 50th occasion of Anderson taking five or more wickets in his first-class career.
The pacer also has 30 five-wicket hauls to his name at the Test match level, where he is England’s highest ever wicket-taker with 617 scalps at an average of 26.67.
Last month, Anderson also became England’s most-capped Test cricketer with 162 matches, which is now higher than his former teammate Sir Alastair Cook, who wore the English Test whites 161 times. He is already the most capped fast-bowler in the history of the game.
“I thought I wasn’t good enough. I thought it was a huge step up from county cricket. I remember Nasser [Hussain] didn’t have a fine leg for me and I went for quite a few runs. My first ball was a no-ball as well so there were a lot of nerves there and I did feel like this was maybe a step too far for me at that point.”
