Several reports claim that Tottenham have agreed to a fee with Atalanta for the transfer of center-back Cristian Romero. Consequently, Atalanta are close to signing Merih Demiral from Juventus as Romero’s replacement.
The Athletic reports that Tottenham have reached an agreement with the Serie A outfit for the transfer of the 23-year-old, with an official announcement expected to arrive shortly. Atalanta, meanwhile, have wasted no time in lining up his replacement.
Spurs will pay La Dea 50 million euros upfront, with the fee rising to 55 million after add-ons. Romero, who only recently became an Atalanta player permanently, will complete his medical checks, agree to personal terms, and in time, will be announced as a new Tottenham player. Following the arrival of Pierluigi Gollini and Bryan Gil, Romero will become the North London club’s third new signing this summer.
Romero had a campaign to remember for Atalanta. The Argentinian defender arrived at the Gewiss Stadium on a two-year loan from Juventus. At the end of his first year in Bergamo, the 23-year-old was named Serie A’s Defender of the Season 2020/21. Subsequently, he was called up to the Argentina National Team squad for Copa America 2021, and helped his team win the regional tournament for the first time since 1993.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Atalanta will sign Merih Demiral from Juventus as a replacement for the outgoing Romero. The Turkey international will be loaned to La Dea, who will have the option to make his stay permanent after a year for 28 million euros. Atalanta will also pay Juventus a 3 million euro fee to sign Demiral temporarily.
Demiral will become Atalanta’s fourth major signing of the summer. The Serie A side signed Juan Musso and Mateo Lovato from Udinese and Hellas Verona, respectively. The pair arrived on permanent deals and were joined by Giuseppe Pezzella. The Argentinian signed on a loan deal with the option to buy – similar to what is being reported for Demiral.
