Two months have passed since Tottenham decided to discharge Jose Mourinho of his managerial duties without securing a replacement. However, their search looks to be coming to an end, with former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo emerging as the prime candidate.
According to Sky Sports News, Tottenham are in talks with former Wolverhampton manager Nuno Espirito Santo to take over the vacant role at the club. Spurs previously courted Antonio Conte, Paulo Fonseca, and Gennaro Gattuso but failed to appoint any of them in place of the departed Jose Mourinho. Ryan Mason temporarily took charge of his boyhood club towards the end of the season, but a full-time job wasn’t offered to him.
Nuno has been without a job since leaving Wolves at the end of the previous season. While his former club has since found a replacement in Bruno Lage, Nuno himself has seen a potential opportunity to take over at Crystal Palace spurned. Spurs are now the likeliest destination for the tactician, albeit he wasn’t one of the prime candidates to take over the vacant role when he left his job at Wolves. Nonetheless, rejection from several candidates have turned the North London club towards him.
Brighton and Hove Albion manager Graham Potter is also one of the candidates linked with the Tottenham job. Nonetheless, Sky reports that it is likely that Potter will stay at Brighton for at least another season. Spurs, meanwhile, have had approaches turned down for former boss Mauricio Pochettino and Sevilla’s Julen Lopetegui.
Nuno, who is the leading candidate to take over Spurs at the moment, is a manager with plenty of Premier League experience. The Portuguese tactician led Wolves to a promotion to the top division and subsequent back-to-back top half finishes. Wolves even reached the Europa League under Nuno but failed to progress past the quarter-finals stage. He was named Premier League’s Manager of the Month on three occasions and given an honorary doctorate in sport by the University of Wolverhampton in recognition for his achievements at the club.
