We’ve all been there at some point in our lives when an out-of-control six ends up breaking a neighbour’s window. Even in professional cricket, there have been iconic moments when a gigantic six ended up catching somebody in the crowd off-guard or breaking something in the dugout.
When two local Yorkshire clubs Illingworth St. Mary’s and Sowerby St Peters took on each other, a very comic episode followed that went viral on social media. Illingworth St Mary’s Asif Ali was at the crease, and he appeared to be in good nick. Facing the next delivery of Grogan, he cracked a perfectly timed shot over fine leg boundary for a six. However, instead of celebrating with his fist high in the air, he ended up hanging his head in his hand and his joy quickly turned to sorrow.
The ball travelled the entire distance and went beyond the boundary to hit Ali’s car parked just outside. It ended up making contact with his windscreen at the back, which inevitably broke. The opposition bowler and fielders, his own teammate, and the umpires couldn’t help but crack a laugh at this as Asif dropped to the pitch in shock.
Illingworth St Mary’s Cricket Club had captured the entire incident and uploaded the clip on their Twitter platform. The video instantly went viral among netizens and received over 11,000 likes and 2500 retweets in just a few hours. Even renowned media houses in England, such as ITV Network decided to cover the incident. The cricket club also uploaded a picture of the back of Ali’s car, which showed his smashed windscreen.
After the match, he spoke to ITV to describe his reaction, from feeling like he’s hit a massive six to realizing that he broke his own car’s windscreen.
“Without looking at first, I thought I had hit a really big six. But I then saw the ball going towards my car and I’m like oh no, no, no, no don’t, don’t, and it ends up hitting my screen! I was shocked, what have I done?”
He also went on to add that this was the first time he brought his car to the car park.
“I’ve been playing cricket for this club for a long time but I never bring my car to the car park. I always park outside. That was the first time I brought my car here and I ended up smashing the windscreen.”
Asif Ali also revealed that the car is also his taxi and is a source of his income.
