England’s county cricket club Middlesex has announced the singing of Daryl Mitchell for the 2021 season of the Vitality T20 Blast. The New Zealand all-rounder will play the last nine group stage matches of the tournament. Middlesex have already signed Ireland’s Paul Stirling for the first five matches of their campaign.
Both Stirling and Mitchell have been roped in as Mitchell Marsh’s replacements, who has been included in the Australia squad for the West Indies tour. Mitchell is currently a part of New Zealand’s Test team, which will take on India in the World Test Championship on June 18 at Southampton. After the conclusion of the WTC final, Mitchell will join Middlesex.
“I am really honoured to have signed with Middlesex and to be able to call Lord’s my home for the Vitality Blast.
I’m looking forward to meeting up with the group after our Test Championship final versus India and getting stuck into winning some T20 cricket,”
Mitchell stated on Friday (May 21).
Middlesex head coach Stuart Law spoke about the addition of Mitchell and the value he brings to the table. Law is looking forward to working with the 30-year-old.
“It’s great that Daryl has agreed to play for us in the T20 Blast this season. He comes highly recommended by his New Zealand contemporaries and we have watched him force his way into that strong New Zealand team over the last few years.
He brings an all-round game, with a focus on power hitting, and good cricket intellect,”
Law stated.
Mitchell had debuted for NZ in 2019 and has played a total of 22 International matches in all three formats, with two quick-fire centuries to his name.
He has featured in over 100 games in domestic T20 cricket, scoring 2110 runs at a healthy strike rate of 131 while also picking 48 wickets with the ball.
