Jose Mourinho was relieved of his duties as the manager of Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month. However, if reports are to be believed, the Portuguese coach could have a job as early as next season. He has been linked with a return to Serie A with Inter Milan.
Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City beat Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup Final on Sunday. Spurs were completely outplayed by the opposition, partly because of Harry Kane’s recent injury struggles and the fact that they had a rookie in the dugout. Ryan Mason had been put in charge of the first team by Daniel Levy once he decided to remove Jose Mourinho from his position. The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager, who many argued could’ve been the perfect man to beat a Guardiola team in a final, was relieved of his duties earlier this month following a dismal run of results.
Nevertheless, Mourinho is not expected to sit on the sidelines for much longer if reports are to be believed. The Portuguese tactician is already being linked with a return to Italy, where he enjoyed great success with Inter Milan. Coincidentally, it is the same team he could end up coaching next season.
According to a report by Calciomercato, Jose Mourinho could end up replacing Antonio Conte at Inter Milan before the start of next season. Conte is currently on the verge of lifting the Serie A title with the Nerazzurri, with only two wins standing between them and the trophy. However, the Italian has suffered from a fractured relationship with the club hierarchy and could be gone before the start of the subsequent season.
The report states that Mourinho would be open to the idea of returning to coach Inter Milan, a team with which he achieved enormous success. He led Inter to a historic treble back in 2009/10, with his side winning the domestic league, the domestic cup, and the UEFA Champions League. Should the Inter job be vacant ahead of the subsequent season, Mourinho would consider taking it. He is said to be keen on the idea of returning to Italy, while he is also open to the prospect of leading the Portugal National Team.
Furthermore, Mourinho could even take a salary cut to land the Inter job. The report concludes that the coach would be willing to reduce his salary to 10 million euros per season. He would also be willing to sign a yearly contract with the Nerazzurri, which would be renewed automatically should he win a trophy.
Nevertheless, the only way that Mourinho would even get an opportunity to manage Inter again is if the club decides to sack Conte. The Italian has indeed enjoyed a tumultuous relationship with the club and has often criticized them publicly in the past over the lack of star signings. However, remains in charge of the senior team and is on the cusp of winning them their first league title since 2010.
Inter Milan are currently eleven points clear at the top of Serie A. The Nerazzurri trailed their rivals AC Milan for the first half of the season. However, injuries and European football took their toll on Stefano Pioli’s side, allowing Inter to snatch the lead from them. They have since managed to open up a considerable gap between themselves and the chasing pack.
Conte’s team could potentially wrap up the title next weekend if results go their way. Should all of Atalanta, AC Milan, and Juventus lose their respective matches, and Inter win theirs, they will be crowned the champions of Italy.
