Kerala Blasters have confirmed the arrival of Greek-Australian international Apostolos Giannou for the upcoming Indian Super League season. The 32-year-old joins Blasters from Macarthur FC in the A-League and becomes the club’s first foreign signing of the summer transfer window.
The signing comes at an ideal time for the Blasters, who have lost winger Vincy Barretto and striker Alvaro Vazquez in June.
“I’m very happy Apostolos finally joined Kerala Blasters, he was our target for the last two years. He is a hardworking attacker who fits our style of play. I also like him because he is a player who plays for the team. I wish him the best time in Kerala!”.
said KBFC’s sporting director Karolis Skinkys.
In 2016, Giannou joined the Chinese club Guangzhou City FC for a club-record fee of 2.5 million euros. After two successful seasons in Asia, he moved to Cyprus to join AEK Larnaca before switching to Greek side OFI Crete FC in 2020. The player then spent six months at Macarthur FC, where he made 21 appearances and scored three goals.
Giannou has made 12 senior national team appearances for Australia. He has also worn the Greek national jersey on one occasion.
“I’m really excited to be signing for Kerala Blasters. I will put my all for the team to achieve the goals it has for this year,”
Giannou joins KBFC as the club’s first foreign signing of the summer. The addition of Giannou gives the Blasters a new look as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Meanwhile, FC Goa has signed Spanish forward Iker Guarrotxena on a two-year contract. The 29-year-old comes in as the fourth-highest goalscorer in the Spanish third division last season, with 14 goals, including a hat-trick and two braces and three assists for Logrones.
Starting his senior career in Spain’s fourth division, the Bilbao native has played for teams such as Bilbao Athletic (reserve team of LaLiga side Athletic Club) and Cultural Leonesa, as well as in Poland, Greece, and Australia.
