Multiple reports claim that Liverpool have won the race for SL Benfica striker forward Darwin Nunez. The Reds will pay a club-record fee to sign the forward, surpassing the 75 million pounds the Premier League giants paid Southampton for the transfer of centre-back Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.
As per a report in Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Liverpool will pay Benfica a total of 100 million euros, split into the main fee and add-ons, to secure the deal. The Reds will produce 75 million upfront and the remaining 25 in bonuses, which can be split further into three instalments of 5, 10, and 10, to be paid after the player hits specific targets.
UD Almeria, to whom Benfica paid 24 million euros two years ago to sign Nunez in September 2020, will receive 10 million from the transaction. Furthermore, the Uruguayan will earn 12 million gross a season at Anfield and sign a contract for the next six years.
Nunez will join Liverpool as the top scorer of the Portuguese first division in 2021/22, having scored 26 times in 28 Primeira Liga appearances. His overall record in Portugal, meanwhile, stands at a respectable 48 goals in 85 appearances, more than a third of which he scored in his second season at the club.
With a new forward inbound, Liverpool will turn their attention to procure a backup for right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. To that end, the Reds are interested in Aberdeen youngster Calvin Ramsay and have made an official bid to sign the defender – reports Fabrizio Romano.
The two clubs remain in the hopes of an agreement – with the Italian reporting that the Scottish club is asking for a sum around the 10 million pound mark to allow their academy graduate to leave.
18-year-old Ramsay enjoyed a breakout season in 2021/22, representing Aberdeen 33 times across all competitions and scoring one goal. For his contributions, the teenager was named the Scottish Football Writers Association’s Young Player of the Year for the campaign.
