Former Liverpool midfielder turned Match of the Day football pundit Danny Murphy believes that West Ham midfielder Declan Rice will be a more than suitable replacement for Jordan Henderson at the heart of the engine room for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Henderson, who joined Liverpool in 2011 from Sunderland, has been a crucial part of the side under Jurgen Klopp. He became the first Reds captain to lift the Premier League trophy in three decades when The Reds won the crown back in 2020. He had also helped the side win their seventh Champions League title a year earlier, beating Tottenham 2-0 in the final.
However, the 31-year-old is no longer one of the first names on the teamsheet for Klopp. The likes of Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho, and Naby Keita are ahead in the pecking order, and the competition for places in the midfield has gotten increasingly intensified.
Danny Murphy considers Declan Rice to be a more than great signing for the Reds, who could bolster their engine room to new heights with the signing of the West Ham midfielder. Hammers manager David Moyes is insistent that the 23-year-old is worth at least 150 million pounds, and the club has also maintained the same asking rate for him as far as other potential bidders, including Manchester United, are concerned.
Although Liverpool under FSG have had a strict limitation on how they spend cash and the 150 million pounds price tag will be beyond what they will be ready to cough up, ex-Liverpool midfielder Murphy insists that Rice will be a ‘phenomenal’ signing.
“I know he’ll be really expensive, and Liverpool won’t pay that sort of money, but if you’re asking me from a fan’s mindset and a pundit mindset, then if Liverpool were to only sign Declan Rice it would be a phenomenal signing. But as I say I think it would be unlikely,”
he told Anfield Watch.
