Despite rumours linking him with a transfer elsewhere and home fans jeering his recent performances, Brazil international Neymar Jr is set to stay at PSG for the time being – reports Goal.
The 30-year-old moved to Paris in 2017 for a world record fee of 222 million euros from FC Barcelona and is said to be content with his current situation in spite of the fans’ wrath. Furthermore, with the attacker earning an astronomical weekly wage with a long-term contract securing his future, the player’s representatives are unsure whether moving away at this time would be a beneficial move.
Former France international and World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit echoed the supporters’ displeasure, claiming in a recent interview that Neymar’s renewal means he is an impossible asset to sell.
“PSG’s biggest problem is called Neymar. In addition, with his salary and a contract until 2026, he is impossible to sell, especially just a few months before the World Cup.
Petit told RMC Sport.
For this reason, the biggest mistake made by PSG in recent years has been his contract renewal. How is it possible that they extended it when the player does not help the team in any way?”
At present, Neymar reportedly earns an eye-watering 606,000 pounds per week with his current contract set to expire in 2025 with the option to extend it for another year.
The Brazil international has been a sporadic contributor for PSG in the five years since his mega-money move from Camp Nou. To date, his highest appearance tally in Paris stands at 31 across all competitions for one season.
In comparison, his attack partner Kylian Mbappe has never made fewer than 35 appearances in his five seasons at the club. Despite that, Neymar has contributed with 92 goals and played a key role during the team’s run to the UEFA Champions League final in the 2019/20 season.
