Multiple sources have reported that Arsenal are interested in signing Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix this summer. Atletico Madrid had signed Felix in 2019 for a sum of 126 million euros but he hasn’t delivered on those expectations and could be on the way out.
Reliable football journalist Miguel Delaney had previously reported that the Atleti forward had been offered to Arsenal. Delaney also suggested that at the time, it was unclear whether the Gunners were actually keen on signing him but Football.London believe that Arsenal are exploring the idea of acquiring his services.
However, there could be several roadblocks involved before a deal starts taking shape. Felix cost Atletico Madrid over 126 million, and they will be looking for a way to recover most of the investment. The player had also put pen to paper to a seven-year contract in 2019 and has several years left before a probable change of scenery.
Arsenal’s relationship with the Madrid-based club is also not exactly healthy at the moment. The Spanish club didn’t handle Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira’s loan well enough and messed negotiations with Arsenal. The side from North London responded by triggering Thomas Partey’s release clause on deadline day, leaving Arsenal depleted in resources.
Although Felix’s form has improved lately, seven goals and five assists in 27 games is also an extremely poor return considering the expectations that surround him. However, it’s also true that Felix is only 22 years old and has a bright future ahead of him.
Reports also suggest that Arsenal are ready to splash cash towards the end of the season to give Mikel Arteta further options to reinforce the squad as they continue to make inroads in the Premier League. The Gunners spent over 150 million pounds in the transfer window last summer, but they are far from done.
The new signings have had a positive impact on Arsenal’s performances this season, and they are already up to fourth place in the Premier League and have won eight of their last 10 matches and are exploring a return to the Champions League for the first time in five years.
Arteta and sporting director Edu are said to be interested in signing six new players: two strikers, a midfielder, a winger, a left-sided central defender and a right-back this summer.
