In a battle of two domestic cricket powerhouses, Karnataka defeated Mumbai in round three of the Elite Group B in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021-22, India’s premier List A competition. Karnataka won over Mumbai by seven wickets after a strong all-around display.
Praveen Dubey was the star of the show with the ball as he took 4/29 off his 10 overs. Ably supported by spin twins KC Kariappa (1/18) and Jagdeesha Suchith (1/34), Dubey’s magnificent spell allowed Karnataka to dominate Mumbai with the ball, restricting them to just 208/9 in 50 overs.
In the run-chase, the South Indian giants had opener Ravikumar Samarth guiding his team through with an unbeaten 96. His opening partner Rohan Kadam made a watchful 44. Karnataka lost a few wickets in the middle, but then veteran Karun Nair (39*) steadied the ship and took his team home along with Samarth.
For Mumbai, opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal (61) top-scored and Prashant Solanki (2/48) bagged a couple of wickets. But lack of enough support at the other end meant that they had to settle with a defeat.
In Elite Group C, Uttar Pradesh got one-up over their northern rivals Delhi, winning comprehensively by nine wickets at Sector 16 stadium in Chandigarh. Lalit Yadav (57) and Anuj Rawat (50) made the fifties to push Delhi to a score of 243 in the first half, which UP chased down with more than six overs to spare thanks to a terrific hundred from Aryan Juyal (120*) and his opening partnership with Madhav Kaushik (89). Shivam Mavi (4/48) was the star with the ball for UP in the first half.
In other VJHT matches played on December 11, Elite Group E saw Rajasthan come out top versus Railways, Services winning by just one wicket against Goa and Punjab dominating Assam.
Elite Group D had Kerala pulling one over Maharashtra despite young Ruturaj Gaikwad continuing his terrific run and scoring another century. MP defeated Uttarakhand in this group, while Chattisgarh got a win against Chandigarh.
Gujarat beat Himachal and Vidarbha beat Odisha in Elite Group A, where Andhra also defeated J & K. In Elite Group C, apart from the UP-Delhi encounter, other round matches saw Saurashtra defeating Hyderabad, Haryana winning over Jharkhand.
Tripura beat Sikkim, Bihar won against Nagaland, while Meghalaya defeated Manipur and Mizoram came out on top versus Arunachal Pradesh in the Plate group.
