Multiple reports have suggested that Newcastle United, who were recently acquired by a Saudi-led consortium, are planning to make a record transfer move to sign Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier. It has also probable that the transfer would make Trippier the highest-paid Newcastle United player in history, in a deal that could see the Englishman earn a whopping £150,000 per week in wages.
Trippier was heavily linked with a move back to the Premier League back in the summer, after Atletico’s La Liga victory, with Manchester United showing a lot of interest to secure his services. However, United were unable to meet Atletico’s transfer fee demands, with the Spanish giants expecting around £50 million, including add-ons. The versatile Englishman is now tipped to be on Newcastle’s radar, who are willing to break their club transfer record to sign him.
Trippier had a stellar Euro 2020, notably providing the assist for England’s only goal in the finals, which they eventually lost in heartbreaking fashion. Having entered the last 18 months of his contract at Atletico, it is considered likely that Trippier could leave Spain and return to England after nearly three years.
The right-back position is one of concern at Newcastle, with neither of Manquillo or Krafth offering a sustainable option. If completed, the signing of Trippier could prove to be a top move. Trippier is highly adaptable, comfortably slotting into the right-back position, in addition to his ability to play as a right wing-back, a right-sided midfielder, or even in the right side of a three-man defence.
Trippier is also a specialist when it comes to set-pieces. He is brilliant with freekicks, corners and even penalties, which is a valuable asset to any side. Although he will not come cheap by any stretch of the word, there are those who believe that Trippier will be worth the price tag.
If Newcastle do end up signing Trippier, they would have to break the club transfer record of £39 million which they spent to sign Joelinton a few years ago. Although the transfer window opens in January, Newcastle are expected to make the move for Trippier in the summer transfer window ahead of the 2022/23 season.
