Easily the greatest ever player to don the Napoli jersey, Diego Maradona passed away in November 2020, and towards the end of this month, it’ll be one year for his demise. Just a few days ago, it was his birth anniversary, and the Naples club decided to pay a special tribute to one of their very own.
The club have designed a special jersey, which they will be wearing across the three league games they’ll play in November. The jersey has a carving of the great man’s picture just under the sponsor’s name, and it has received great plaudits from the fans. The expectation is that this jersey will make great sales as well.
Napoli will be playing Verona and Lazio at home in Serie A, including an away trip to Inter in between. After many moons, the club has found their lost glory and are keen on going all the way under the stewardship of Luciano Spalletti.
Diego Maradona has been a massive presence in the city, having walked in there for the first time in 1984 after completing a move from Barcelona. He remained seven years at the club, helping them win the league title twice. As it turns out, those two are the only league title Napoli ever won. To add to it, he also won the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup once.
Maradona made 259 appearances for the Gli Azzurri, scoring 115 times, 81 of which came in the league. He was only the third player in club history to score 100 or more goals, after Attila Sallustro and Antonio Vojak, and remained the highest goal-scorer for the club until Marek Hamsik took over.
Napoli are currently top of the table in the Italian league with 31 points to their credit in 11 games. They dropped points only in one game, which came against Roma in a 0-0 draw. They are currently level on points with AC Milan, who themselves have been in sensational form and dropped points in just a single game.
Following their path are FC Barcelona, who have announced that the club will be playing a game against the Argentine club Boca Juniors on December 14. This game will be called “Maradona Cup” and will be played in honour of the 1986 World Cup-winner.
This game will be played in Mrsool Park in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It holds up to 25,000 spectators. The game will be screened on Barcelona’s official streaming service, “Barca TV+”.
