With a big fixture against arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur coming up, Arsenal boss has backed Pierre Emerick Aubameyang to deliver a match-winning performance on September 26.
The Gabon international was dramatically dropped from the North London derby last season. While the Gunners went on to win 2-1 against Spurs, the forward was left as an unused substitute as he was punished for coming late to the game.
The Spanish tactician believes that his captain can put that incident behind him and fire for the Gunners in a high voltage clash against their arch-rivals. Aubameyang is in pristine form and Arteta backs him to deliver:
“I did that on the day and now I think Auba is in a different position.
It doesn’t mean he was in a bad position at the time, it was just an incident that we as a team had some ways of living together – that wasn’t the case (from him at that time) and so we made a decision.
“Now he has been in really good form, I think the way he played at Burnley even though he didn’t score a goal, was extraordinary in the way he played for the team so we are expecting him to keep doing the same.
Aubameyang scored the solitary goal against Norwich City in their 1-0 win which, turned their campaign around after a disastrous start to the Premier League season.
With two wins in the Premier League, Arsenal have lifted them to the 13th position in the points table. But they are only three points away from Tottenham Hotspur, and a win for the Gunners will change the entire complexion of the table.
