The Nerazzurri sustained dangerous Fiorentina spells before staging a comeback to beat La Viola in their latest Serie A encounter. Simone Inzaghi’s side go top of the table, thanks to a 3-1 wi
The Nerazzurri were second best for large periods of the game at Artemio Franchi stadium, but staged a comeback in the second half to secure maximum points. Inter were aided by Fiorentina going down to 10-men late on, as Nicholas Gonzalez was sent off for two bookable offenses within 30 seconds of each other.
Fiorentina were in the ascendancy right from kick-off and could have scored twice if not for a couple of superb stops from Samir Handanovic.
The slovenian denied Gonzalez first from close range before tipping over Dusan Vlahovic’s shot acrobatically. However, Inter goalkeeper could do nothing but watch when an unmarked Riccardo Sottil connected with Gonzalez’s cross at the back post, giving Fiorentina the lead.
Vincenzo Italiano’s side started the half on top, too. However, the tides turned in the 52nd minute, as the Nerazzurri strung together a few passes before Nicolo Barella played in Matteo Darmian, and the wingback smashed the ball into the net from close range. Three minutes later, Inter took the lead through Edin Dzeko, who headed the ball past Bartlomiej Dragowski from a corner kick.
Things went from bad to worse for Fiorentina when Gonzalez saw red for sarcastically applauding the referee.
The Argentine had received a caution thirty seconds prior for his zealous complaints about Alessandro Bastoni not being shown a yellow, despite pulling his shirt.
Inter capitalized on their personnel advantage and closed off the tie in the 87th minute, as Roberto Gagliardini squared the ball to Ivan Perisic, who tapped it into an empty net.
Inter Milan will lose their top spot before the end of the matchday, should Napoli beat Sampdoria on September 23.
