Jamshedpur FC have announced the signing the centre-forward Greg Stewart. The 31-year-old joins the Indian Super League outfit from Rangers.
Incidentally, Stewart learnt the ropes at Rangers youth team before plying his trade for Scottish outfits like Cowdenbeath, Dundee United and Aberdeen.
His first big move was when he joined Birmingham City in 2016. Since then, he has featured three teams on loan. He had some stellar seasons in the Premiership with Dundee as he scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists in the 2014-15 season. He followed up with another productive season, netting nine goals and 15 assists in the 2015-16 season.
In the 2018-19 season, he enjoyed a great campaign with Kilmarnock as he scored eight goals along with seven assists. In July 2019, Stewart joined Rangers, and after two seasons, he is trying out a new challenge in India.
During his two-season stay at Ibrox, Stewart failed to place in the starting eleven. When fit, he was crucial to Steven Gerrard’s plans mainly due to his versatility. While Stewart is predominantly a striker, he has also slotted in as a second striker or even as an attacking midfielder. He can even play out on the flanks.
The 31-year-old was delighted to put pen to paper as he said,
“I am so excited to see what this season has in store for us. It’s a new adventure for me and one I am really looking forward to.
It’s going to be an amazing experience to work under Owen Coyle and give everything on the pitch to get silverware for Jamshedpur. Just can’t wait to get started.”
Jamshedpur FC head coach Owen Coyle opened up on how Stewart is the right man for the job:
“We were looking for a versatile and creative midfielder in the market to complete a menacing group of attacking players for our squad. Greg fit into that criterion perfectly. He comes with exemplary experience of playing in the biggest leagues across the UK.
And of course, he had an amazing opportunity to play for one of the Glasgow giants which shows he has a strong and winning mentality. The fans can expect a lot of chances to score goals from Jamshedpur this season.”
