Ex-Arsenal striker, and the current sporting director of Ajax, Marc Overmars has distanced himself from links to a similar job at the North London club. The links emerged in the wake of the Gunners’ poor start to the season despite a big-money summer transfer window.
Incumbent Eduardo Gaspar has come under criticism from the fans for Arsenal’s poor start to the league. Mikel Arteta’s side are winless in three Premier League games and are yet to score a goal – despite spending around 145 million pounds this summer.
As a result, the Dutchman has been linked with the role at his former club. Overmars told Ajax TV that he was offered the opportunity to work elsewhere – whether that was at Arsenal or not remains unclear. However, he further added that he is comfortable where he is at the moment.
“As I’ve said before a number of times we’re really enjoying ourselves. We’re moving in the right direction. The four of us form good management and that’s important.
“I’m not getting any younger. I’ve been offered the opportunity to go elsewhere too. That’s what happens and it’s always good to consider a move.
“But then I just think about how well things are going here. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. If your old shoes are still comfy, keep wearing them.”
Both Edu and Arteta have come under fire for what is officially Arsenal’s worst start to a league season. The Gunners lost on the opening day of the 2021/22 season to newly-promoted Brentford (0-2) before suffering the same fate against the European and domestic champions, Chelsea (0-2) and Manchester City (0-5), respectively.
Arsenal’s approach to the transfer market has left some fans bemused. The Gunners have spent heavily, albeit most of the money has gone towards young prospects such as Ben White and Aaron Ramsdale. Yet, several key positions remain vulnerable.
