Arsenal’s technical director Edu has backed head coach Mikel Arteta and the team after the club’s worst start to a league season. The Gunners brought in heavy reinforcements this summer, but sit bottom of the table after their first three losses in the Premier League.
Sporting Director Eduardo Gaspar sat down with Sky Sports to quell concerns surrounding the team. The Brazilian defended the players and the manager and asked critics to hold their judgments until they have watched the team play together.
“To be fair, we have had three games and I haven’t seen the team playing together yet. I want to see the team play together and then let’s judge the team when they play together. Then, after that, no problem. Judge us then.
I understand the situation we are in now is really tough. It’s not an excuse but let’s judge the team when they play together.”
Edu told Sky Sports.
Arsenal’s four matches this season have ended with three losses and a win – the win coming in the EFL Cup against a second-string West Bromwich Albion side. In the three league games this season, the Gunners lost without scoring a single goal.
They lost to Brentford on opening day before Chelsea – and Romelu Lukaku – put them to the sword a week later. The misery of the opening two weekends was compounded by a 5-0 loss against Manchester City, with Granit Xhaka receiving his latest red card during the match.
Beyond their disastrous start to the season lies Arsenal’s heavy summer window spend. The Gunners recruited six new players during the transfer window, becoming the club with the most spent on incomings.
Arteta’s side will host Norwich City in the Premier League match on September 11.
