Tottenham Hotspur and Serge Aurier mutually agreed to terminate their partnership on the final day of the summer 2021 transfer window. According to Sky Sports, a free agent is considering a surprise move to another North London club, Arsenal.
Spurs signed the Ivorian from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 for a deal believed to be worth in the region of 23 million pounds. Prior to his move to England, the defender had played his entire professional career in France and had secured his big move to PSG in 2014.
Aurier played 81 times during his three-year stint in Paris before making 110 appearances for Spurs between 2017 and 2021. He scored 12 goals in the same period – four for PSG and eight for Spurs. The defender won the league in France twice with PSG and finished second in the 2020/21 EFL Cup and the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League with Tottenham.
Arsenal are currently well-stocked in the right-back department. The club loaned out Hector Bellerin to Real Betis on deadline day but signed Tottenham target Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna in return.
The Japan international signed a long-term contract with the club and is expected to compete with Cedric Soares and Callum Chambers for the right-back spot.
The Gunners have Ainsley Maitland-Niles on their books as well, who can play in the same position. The youngster was denied a move away from the club in the eleventh hour and since has held clear-the-air talks with manager Mikel Arteta.
Should Aurier sign for Arsenal in the coming days, he would become their seventh new signing.
