Ex-Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini, who took over at Real Betis manager in 2020, have made some shocking statements regarding La Liga.
The Argentine tactician has been in charge Spanish teams Villareal, Real Madrid and Malaga, before his three-year successful stint at the Etihad Stadium. He won the Premier League with Manchester City and also bagged two League Cups during his time.
Famous for his calmness and composure, the 67-year-old is widely regarded as one of the most experienced managers in world football. However, his stint at West Ham was highly criticised by fans and experts as he struggled to get the desired results.
His current side Real Betis have not had a very good start to their La Liga season with two 1-1 draws against RCD Mallorca and Cadiz. After the game against Cadiz he made some shocking statements regarding the Spanish La Liga.
“La Liga is the slowest league in Europe, with the least amount of actual football.
“People want to watch a show, and we’re not giving it to them. The most time-wasting, the most dives, it’s a disgrace. We have to make an effort between referees and players so that the Spanish league is not this shame.
Teams that sit back all match, they will always have an unfair advantage. There are too many disgusting fouls and time wasting.”
“There is a show that we have to take care of. People pay a ticket for something.”
he told Marca.
It was a very tight match where Cadiz took the early lead through a spot-kick from Alvaro Negredo. However, Betis’ Spanish forward Juanmi levelled the scoreline soon after. But both sides failed to score the decisive goal that would hand them all three points.
After finishing sixth last season, Pellegrini’s men will be looking to improve on their performance. They recently announced the signing of Argentine centre-back German Pezzella in a unique Grand Theft Auto fashion.
The experienced Argentine defender will look to give them more stability in defence and help the Green and Whites perform at the desired level in La Liga and also in Europa League.
La Liga’s stakes have already fallen after Barcelona failed to balance their books and did not manage to hold on to Lionel Messi, primarily due to the league’s wage restrictions. The Argentine magician had to end his 21-year stint with the club to join Paris Saint-Germain.
Apart from Messi, La Liga lost stalwarts in Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane. While the Spaniard has moved to Paris and will play alongside Messi, the Frenchman has joined Manchester United to take up a new challenge in the Premier League.
