Liverpool boss has admitted that the Reds won’t be dipping into the transfer market again this summer, despite signing only Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.
“It is summer and the transfer window is open, then everyone expects some player signings. We will see what happens. Let’s go through the squad. Do you want to buy a new full-back? A new goalkeeper? We already have good players there.
“You have to make changes from time to time, but then there must be room to do it. We do not want more players. If something happens somewhere, something can happen somewhere else, but it makes no sense to add more players.”
the German stated in a recent interview with TV2.
Despite winning the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League in recent years, Liverpool have refrained from spending too much in the transfer market. Their major signings over the last few seasons include Takumi Minamino, Thiago Alcantara, Diogo Jota, and Ibrahima Konate – the latter only arriving this summer from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have continued to sell players during this time, thereby balancing their spending with their sales. However, the Reds have also lost key personnel on free transfers during recent transfer windows.
Georginio Wijnaldum became the latest player to leave Anfield upon contract expiry before joining PSG. Former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can did the same in 2018 when Juventus signed him on a free transfer.
In a more positive bit of news for Liverpool fans, Virgil van Dijk has returned following a long-term injury and is expected to start their league opener against Norwich City (August 14).
However, Liverpool will be without Andrew Robertson, who damaged his ankle in a 1-1 friendly draw against Athletic Bilbao. Greek left-back Kostas Tsimikas, who joined the club last summer, is expected to start in his absence.
