Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has revealed that he is looking for a new club, as two Serie A sides have emerged as his potential destination. Now 29 years of age, Shaqiri joined the Reds from Stoke City back in 2018 for £13.5 million.
The Swiss had a good first season with the Kopites. Not only did he feature in 30 games in the 2018/19 season, but he also found the back of the net on six occasions.
However, chances have come few and far between for him in the last two seasons. The signing of Diogo Jota from Wolverhampton Wanderers further depleted Shaqiri’s chances of featuring in the Liverpool first XI.
Quite understandably, he is looking for a move away from the Premier League club, and Napoli and Lazio are reportedly interested in acquiring his services. If reports are to be believed, The Reds will not block the transfer as long as their valuation of £12-15M is met by any club.
Liverpool have already sold quite a few squad players this summer, and it is quite clear that Jurgen Klopp’s team is trying to raise funds for a few statement signings through player sales.
“The important thing at this moment in my career is to be able to play regularly. That hasn’t always been the case in the last three seasons,”
“This is why I told Liverpool that I feel ready for a new challenge. They accepted my wish and will seriously consider the offers that will come. They will not stop me,”
Shaqiri told Corriere dello Sport, as per quotes on The Liverpool Offside.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain might also follow a similar route. The 27-year-old joined Liverpool from Arsenal in 2017.
Like Shaqiri, Oxlade-Chamberlain had a good first year, but with multiple injuries, his performance has taken a hit in the last few seasons. According to reports in Express, West Ham United are interested in signing the Englishman.
