Following a fantastic Euro 2016 where he played a pivotal role in Portugal’s Euros triumph, Sanches joined Bayern Munich for a €35million deal. However, the midfielder failed to find his feet in Germany and had a horrid loan spell with Premier League outfit Swansea City.
Sanches then joined Lille in Ligue 1, and his career changed completely. Under the tutelage of Christophe Galtier and around compatriots Jose Fonte, Xeka and Tiago Djalo, he started regaining his form again. The 23-year-old had a crucial role in Lille’s historic Ligue 1 win last season.
His consistent performances for Lille meant that he was called up for Portugal again for the Euros. Although the reigning champions bowed out in the round of 16 against Belgium, Sanches once again stood out among other midfielders.
His ability to drive the ball through midfield and dazzle past defenders makes him a huge threat. He is someone who has exceptional confidence in his abilities and does not shy away from taking his chances. His ball progression, energy and ability to retain possession can add great value to both the Premier League sides, Arsenal and Liverpool.
Liverpool are looking at him as the ideal replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who left the club as a free agent and joined Paris Saint-Germain. Sanches’ ball progression is similar to the Dutchman; hence, he can be the ideal player for Jurgen Klopp. The Reds are weighing their chances and are also looking at other options like Saul Niguez. But the Portuguese midfielder is in the same mould as Wijnaldum.
Arsenal are also looking to bring in midfield reinforcements. The Gunners have already signed Nuno Tavares from Benfica and Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht. But with Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi and Granit Xhaka all headed out this summer, Mikel Arteta will need more cover in the middle of the park.
Xhaka is closing in on the move to AS Roma, whereas Guendouzi, after a loan with Hertha Berlin, is set to join Marseille. Lastly, Torreira is also considered surplus to requirements, and the Uruguayan is negotiating with Lazio.
