Arsenal are yet to announce any new signings ahead of the 2021/22 season, but fans will be delighted to learn that left-back Kieran Tierney has signed a new contract. The Gunners are hoping that Emile Smith-Rowe will be next.
Tierney arrived at the club in summer 2019 and has impressed both fans and the technical staff with his performances. He has committed his future to the London-based outfit for four more years, with his new deal set to run until summer 2026.
Manager Mikel Arteta rang in the praise for Tierney following the confirmation of the extension:
“KT gives us so much extra strength both defensively and offensively and it’s great to know that he’ll be with us for the long term. Since his move from Celtic, his work ethic and quality has ensured that he is already one of most exciting players in the Premier League and a hugely important part of our team, both on and off the pitch,”
Despite suffering from prolonged spells on the sidelines, Tierney has managed to make over 60 appearances for the Gunners. He has won two trophies at the club – the FA Cup and the FA Community Shield – and scored three goals. Meanwhile, the Scotsman’s versatility means that he has played in multiple positions for the club, although exclusively on the left side of the defence.
Arsenal are hoping that youngster Emile Smith-Rowe follows in Tierney’s footsteps by committing his long-term future to the club. He broke into the first team midway through the previous season and kept his place in the eleven until the end. The midfielder also scored his first two Premier League goals for Arsenal towards the end of the season, against West Bromwich Albion and Chelsea – the latter a winner in a 1-0 win.
However, Smith-Rowe’s situation could be complicated by the fact that Aston Villa have shown interest in him. Villa have had a bid rejected by the Gunners, with the latter unlikely to sanction a move this summer.
