Jose Mourinho has earned a seal of approval from AS Roma legend Francesco Totti. The former Roma captain has labeled Mourinho the best coach in the world, which the tactician has responded to favorably.
It isn’t unfathomable that the second most popular figure in the recent history of Rome, behind the Pope, is Francesco Totti. The Italian played his entire career at AS Roma, despite advances from several top European clubs, and has etched himself into the history of the eternal city. It would do Jose Mourinho’s reputation no harm, then, that the Roman himself has given the Portuguese tactician his seal of approval.
“When he arrives, he will say what he thinks. We have brought in the best coach in the world
If I would have liked to be coached by him? When I was younger, yes. It’s a pity I arrived four years too late.”
Totti said.
Mourinho responded to the praise lavished upon him by Totti on social media. The tactician shared a picture of the two together from his days coaching Inter Milan, before thanking him for his words.
“Thanks for your words Francesco, too bad I arrived four years late,” he said.
“Training you would have been a pleasure.”
Mourinho’s previous spell in Italy brought two league titles – one of which was nearly stolen by Totti’s Roma. However, the Portuguese laid his hands upon the biggest prize while in Italy was the UEFA Champions League, which he won at Inter Milan as part of a historic treble.
He left his heroics in Milan behind to go to Madrid, where he was presented as the head coach of Real Madrid in 2011. Three years, and a league title, later he returned to Chelsea – the club which first offered him the opportunity to manage in the big leagues – and won another domestic title. Subsequently, he had stints in England with Manchester United and Tottenham, the former much more successful than the latter. Spurs relieved him of his duties in April 2021, and he was soon appointed as the manager of AS Roma.
