Liverpool are in danger of missing out on a return to the Champions League as they trail fourth-placed Chelsea by four points. Reports claim that they could lose out on a key transfer target should they fail to qualify for the competition.
According to a report by Bild, via Goal, Liverpool are interested in signing Borussia Dortmund winger, Jadon Sancho. However, the Reds’ hopes of signing the England international rests on whether they can qualify for the Champions League next season. Liverpool are currently outside the top-four places in the league and have already been knocked out of the continental competition.
The report claims that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is a huge fan of the player. Meanwhile, he also fits into the Reds’ recruitment mould of young players with huge potential. However, a transfer would be unlikely should the team fail to secure a spot in the Champions League next season.
Despite winning the Premier League last season, Liverpool are in a struggle for the top four this time around. The Reds slipped up midway through the season and failed to recover in time as teams around them surpassed them on the table. They are sixth in the league behind West Ham United and Chelsea and trail the Blues by four points.
Liverpool’s need for summer spending to reinvigorate their attack was also recently stated by club great Jamie Carragher. The former Reds defender claimed that the current Liverpool front-three needs’ breaking up’ as they have been playing together for far too long.
“When you look at other great attacking partnerships and front threes from the past, they last probably three years and then you move on. Liverpool’s have been together for probably four or five years so it does need breaking up in the summer,”
he said.
“That’s where Liverpool need to invest, as they do at centre-back of course. It’s actually quite similar to Manchester United, but that’s where Liverpool need to spend the money.”
Liverpool did pay a considerable sum to Wolves last season to sign Diogo Jota. The Portuguese attacker has been one of their best performers this season and even managed to displace Roberto Firmino from the starting XI.
