Atletico Madrid recorded an important win on Wednesday night at home against Real Sociedad. Diego Simeone’s men won the match 2-1, thanks to two first-half goals, and are currently four points clear at the top of the table with two matches left to play.
Barcelona missed the chance to leapfrog Atletico Madrid at the top of the table twice in recent weeks. Real Madrid wasted their own opportunities to overtake their city rivals. After surviving the onslaught of their two closest challengers, Atletico have subsequently taken their chance to distance themselves from the chasing pack. With a win against Real Sociedad, Diego Simeone’s side has gone four points clear at the top of LaLiga with just two matches left to play.
Atletico Madrid’s Argentinian tactician named a strong side for their match against Real Sociedad. Luis Suarez started up front and was supported by the likes of Angel Correa, Yannick Carrasco, and Marcos Llorente. The Uruguayan had a great chance to put his side ahead in the opening minutes of the match. Suarez found himself in a great position, facing just the goalkeeper when Llorente played the ball across to him. However, the striker skewed his volley high and wide. Suarez went close again just minutes later when his freekick rattled the side-netting of the Sociedad goal.
The Rojiblancos continued their onslaught in the opening stages and had another great opportunity to take the lead before the ten-minute mark when Llorente was played through on goal. However, Alex Remiro made a good save to deny the Spaniard a goal. Atletico Madrid did take the lead in the 16th minute. Carrasco controlled a long pass inside the box before squeezing the ball in between the legs of the goalkeeper.
Atletico Madrid doubled their lead before the half-hour mark through Correa. The attacker was played in behind the Real Sociedad defence with a perfect through ball by Suarez, and he slotted the ball in the corner. Igor Zubeldia pulled one goal back for La Real, but it was too little too late. Atletico Madrid held onto their lead and claimed all three points from this match.
