The Rossoneri beat the Bianconeri 3-0, with goals stunning goals from Brahim Diaz and Ante Rebic, to move to third in the table.
AC Milan and Juventus met on Sunday night in a league match, with a UEFA Champions League spot on stake. The two teams – who themselves were aiming to lift the title – were left to settle for a top-four spot after Inter Milan were officially crowned champions of Italy last weekend. With Atalanta, Napoli, and Lazio all vying for the three remaining UCL qualification spots – along with Milan and Juventus – the margin for error is very low.
Juventus have had an inconsistent season but were in the top four ahead of their match against Milan. That situation changed when Brahim Diaz scored the opening goal of the game in first-half stoppage time. The Spaniard curled in a stunning effort from the edge of the box, finding the slightest of gaps between a retreating Giorgio Chiellini and the crossbar. With Atalanta and Napoli both winning their respective matches on the weekend, Diaz’s goal pushed AC Milan into the Champions League spots at the expense of Juventus.
The Rossoneri suffered a major blow in the second half when star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic had to be subbed off due to an injury. Milan – and Sweden – will be sweating over the veteran’s fitness with several important matches on the horizon. Nevertheless, Stefano Pioli’s side coped well with the loss of their forward and doubled their lead in the second half. Ante Rebic – who had replaced Ibrahimovic following his injury – scored with a brilliant effort. The Croatian curled the ball past Wojciech Szczesny in goal from range.
Juventus, now assured of sliding out of the top four, suffered further humiliation at the hands of their rivals when Fikayo Tomori scored his first goal in Italy. The on-loan Chelsea defender headed the ball past the goalkeeper following a set-piece situation. Milan’s third goal of the night confirmed all three points for them and moved them up to third in the table.
