Mexico’s national team captain, Edson Álvarez, will miss the remainder of the Copa América after suffering a left hamstring injury. The West Ham United midfielder confirmed the news on Tuesday via social media, expressing his disappointment and commitment to supporting his team from the sidelines.
“Unfortunately, my participation in the Copa América has come to a close. But I also wanted to let you know that I have made the decision to stay with the team until the end.”
Álvarez wrote.
Álvarez, 26, sustained the injury during Mexico‘s opening match against Jamaica last Saturday. He limped off the field in the first half after clutching his left hamstring following a counter-attack by the opposition. Despite his exit, Mexico secured a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Gerardo Arteaga. However, the win was bittersweet for manager Jaime “Jimmy” Lozano and his squad, as they lost a key leader.
Earlier on Tuesday, Lozano acknowledged the significant impact of Álvarez’s injury on the team.
“Losing Edson is a heavy blow for us.”
Lozano said.
In response to Álvarez‘s absence, Lozano announced that 27-year-old Almería defender César Montes would assume the captain’s armband.
“Now it’s César’s turn to captain, and I think he’s going to help us a lot, too. The same with Julio [Gonzalez] and Johan [Vasquez]. I like to see soccer from the back going forward, and I think they are the people who have a bit more stability.”
Lozano stated.
As Mexico prepares for their next matches, the team is focused on securing a spot in the knockout round of the Copa América. The outcome of the other Group B match between Ecuador and Jamaica will be crucial in determining their path. A win on Wednesday could potentially see Mexico and Venezuela advance to the next stage of the tournament.
