AS Roma has confirmed the appointment of Jose Mourinho as their head coach starting from the 2021/22 season. The Italian giants had announced earlier that their current head coach Paulo Fonseca would leave the club after the present season concluded.
In a surprising turn of events, Jose Mourinho was confirmed as the head coach of Serie A side AS Roma, starting from the 2021/22 season. The Portuguese tactician will return to Italy after a decade, having been in charge of Inter Milan. He will replace the outgoing Paulo Fonseca, who was confirmed to be leaving the club at the end of the current season.
Mourinho has signed a deal until 2024 with Roma to act as their head coach. Upon the confirmation of his appointment, the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss revealed the reasons behind him taking the job.
“After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming year,”
“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season.
“In the meantime, I wish Paulo Fonseca all the best and I hope the media appreciate that I will only speak further in due course. Daje Roma!”
he told the club’s official website.
Mourinho’s previous spell in Italy bore incredible success. The Portuguese coach took over Inter Milan in 2008 and led the club to back-to-back league titles. Furthermore, in his second season at the club, Mourinho led Inter to a historic treble, with the Nerazzurri winning the league, the domestic cup, and the UEFA Champions League.
Mourinho subsequently went on to manage Real Madrid before returning to Chelsea for his second spell. He was sacked by the Blues for the second time in 2015 before being appointed as the head coach of Manchester United. His only major success with the Red Devils came in 2017 when he won the UEFA Europa League with them. Mourinho’s last stint was as the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, which lasted from November 2019 until April 2021.
