AS Roma have announced the surprise signing of Argentina midfielder Paulo Dybala. The attacker has been without a club since leaving Juventus at the end of the previous season.
The 28-year-old has signed for AS Roma on a free transfer, the club confirmed on July 20. He has signed a three-year deal with the Giallorossi, led by Jose Mourinho, which will run until the end of the 2024/25 season.
Despite Francesco Totti offering the iconic no. 10 jersey to Dybala, the Argentine will don no. 21 shirt at the Stadio Olimpico, the same he wears for the national side.
“I am joining a team that is on the up, a club that continues to put in place strong foundations for the future, and a coach, Jose Mourinho, that it will be a privilege to work with.
As an opponent, I have always admired the atmosphere created by the Roma fans – I now cannot wait for the chance to salute them while wearing this shirt,”
Dybala told the club’s official website.
The Argentine arrived in Turin seven years ago after a breakout season with the then Serie A side Palermo. Juve beat interest from a host of European clubs to tie him down to a long-term contract in a transfer deal worth 32 million euros.
In his seven years at Juventus, Dybala made 293 appearances for the club and scored 115 goals. He also helped the Old Lady to the Italian crown in five of his seven years in Turin and won her four further domestic cup titles.
Dybala has become Roma’s fourth signing of the season. The Giallorossi previously signed Serbian pair Nemanja Matic and Mile Svilar on free deals before splashing out 7 million euros on Lille OSC right-back Mehmet Zeki Celik.
