Paris Saint-Germain confirmed the departure of first-team manager Mauricio Pochettino, who, later in the day, was replaced by Ligue 1-winning tactician Christophe Galtier.
The Parisians have appointed Galtier as their men’s senior team head coach on a two-year contract, until the end of the 2023/24 season. The Frenchman led Lille OSC to the league title against the financial might of PSG in 2020/21. He joined OGC Nice the season after but was unable to help the Sir Jim Ratcliffe-backed team reach similar heights.
In Paris, Galtier is reunited with advisor Luis Campos, the mastermind behind the Lille and AS Monaco squad builds, the only two teams to have broken PSG’s hegemony over the French domestic crown in the last decade.
“I am delighted to join Paris Saint-Germain, I would like to thank the chairman Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Luis Campos, and the club for their confidence in me.”
“I am fully aware of the responsibilities involved to coach this extraordinary team, which is one of the most competitive and spectacular squads in Europe. I am delighted to work with all of these talented players as well as the top-level staff here at the club.”
“We acknowledge everything that Paris Saint-Germain represents in French and international football. My focus is on ambition, hard work and making the most of the team’s potential.”
he said during his unveiling.
Galtier replaces Mauricio Pochettino in the job. A statement on the club website on Tuesday noon confirmed that the Argentine had been let go, despite leading them to a historic tenth domestic title the season before.
Under the former Tottenham boss, PSG finished first in the league but were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the round-of-16 by the eventual champions Real Madrid.
One season earlier, the former Spurs boss had taken over the club in January from Thomas Tuchel, who would lead Chelsea to the European crown at the end of the season – as PSG were knocked out in the semi-finals by Manchester City.
