Liverpool midfielder James Milner has agreed a new one-year extension with the club, bringing the vice-captain into his eighth season at Anfield.
The Englishman signed for the Reds in a free transfer from Manchester City in the summer of 2015 and, in recent years, has turned into a utility man for Jurgen Klopp, playing a variety of positions across the field as per his team’s requirements.
The 36-year-old is nearing a triple century of appearances for the club. He has played 289 games across all competitions over the last seven seasons and scored 26 goals. Speaking with the Liverpool FC website upon finalizing his new terms, the player claimed that he believed he could still be of value to the team.
“I’m very pleased to be staying for another season. I have never taken playing for this club for granted and I never will.
“An overriding feeling for me – and a vitally important one in the process – was the belief I can still contribute to the team. The gaffer was clear what he thought and that was a big factor in me extending my contract,”
he said.
While Milner will continue to be a part of Klopp’s squad for another season, the same cannot be said for backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
In a recent interview, the 23-yer-old expressed doubts over his future, claiming that he will wait until the season is officially over before deciding his next steps.
“I’m not sure on what’s happening yet. I’m still finishing this season and then we will have conversations after that to see what happens.”
23-Kelleher graduated to the Liverpool first team in 2019 and, in the years since, has managed just 17 appearances for his boyhood club across all competitions.
However, the Irishman did play an important role in the Reds’ EFL Cup success this season; he kept the Chelsea attackers at bay with some key stops and scored the game-deciding penalty in the ensuing shootout.
