The newly–crowned Ligue 1 champions are prepared for a major backroom overhaul this summer, with sporting director Leonardo set to be the first casualty, reports Fabrizio Romano. Manager Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly on the verge of the sack as well.
The Argentinian tactician has had a tumultuous spell in charge of the Parisians, with reports constantly linking him with either the sack or a move back to England – as in charge of Manchester United or his former club Tottenham Hotspur. However, as per Romano, the former Spurs boss is one meeting away from being released, one which should take place once club president Nasser Al-Khelafi is back in town.
The 50-year-old took the reigns of the PSG men’s senior team from Thomas Tuchel in January 2021. While Tuchel led his new club Chelsea to the UEFA Champions League title, Pochettino’s PSG stuttered both domestically and continentally; they were eliminated in the semi-finals of the Champions League by Manchester City and lost the league title to Lille. Poch did lead the Parisians back to the French thrown the season after, but failures in Europe, yet again, soured the season.
Meanwhile, following the team’s embarrassment in the Champions League, after a summer filled with signing big-name stars including Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos, sporting director Leonardo, too, will be sacked.
The Brazilian will be replaced by the much-coveted Luis Campos, the man behind the successes of Ligue 1 sides AS Monaco and Lille – the only two teams to have beaten PSG to the domestic title in the last decade.
Romano reports that an agreement is already in place between Campos and the PSG hierarchy; all that remains is the official announcement, which, as per his report, will be released in the coming days.
57-year-old Campos has been linked with several of Europe’s top clubs in the past, including Manchester United. However, at the moment, he serves as the sporting director of LaLiga outfit Celta Vigo, which he joined following his release from Lille.
