The Brazilian superstar offered a stoic answer in response to Paris Saint-Germain ultras booing his name at home games. In his recent interview with ESPN Argentina, the Brazilian assured that he isn’t going anywhere for the next three years, the fans will have to get used to him.
Despite moving to Paris from Barcelona in 2017, Neymar is yet to become a household name appreciated by the fans of PSG. In fact, things have only become increasingly worse for the superstar whose name is booed quite often by the home ultras at Parc de Princes.
Yet to win a Champions League or even a Ballon d’Or with the club, Neymar has tried, on different occasions, to force his way out of France. This has resulted in discontent, and his frequent injuries and absences from the pitch haven’t helped either.
This could also be extrapolated to the entire PSG squad, including stars like Lionel Messi, Marco Verratti, and Angel Di Maria, who have been receiving sticks from their own fans as well. The worst case of this behaviour was apparent in PSG’s recent Ligue 1 game against Lens. Needing only a point to secure their 10th domestic title, Mauricio Pochettino’s side drew 1-1 thanks to Messi’s fourth league goal and lifted the trophy.
However, much to their surprise, the home fans had started vacating the stands 10 minutes before the full-time whistle. The ground was completely empty almost 15 minutes following the conclusion of the match, and the PSG players couldn’t even do a victory lap around the ground with the silverware.
When asked about the frequent discontent and the scenes that followed the title celebration of players, Neymar told ESPN Argentina:
“I still have a contract with Paris Saint-Germain. I’m here for three more years, so stop [booing] or you’ll need more air.”
Although this isn’t the first time he has been criticized incessantly by the fans of Paris, at least this time, Neymar has reassured that he will be staying put in Paris and isn’t going anywhere else.
PSG had established themselves as the firm favourites to reclaim the title from Lille pretty early in the season and had maintained a safe distance from everyone at the top of the table. However, losing to Real Madrid and getting knocked out of the Champions League was a particularly low point of their season which turned the fans against them.
