Paris Saint-Germain superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar were booed at the Parc des Princes following their humiliating exit from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid. Messi’s former teammate Cesc Fabregas has snapped at the fans and has asked them to be more grateful to the footballers.
The Parisians seemed to have the tie in the bag in the Champions League Round of 16 against Real Madrid and were leading 2-0 on aggregate going into the final 45 minutes of the two-legged affair. However, Karim Benzema scored a hattrick in the space of 17 minutes as Mauricio Pochettino’s men completely lost all shape and bearings to suffer an elimination from the Champions League.
Furious and frustrated, fans took out their anger during PSG’s next Ligue 1 match at home against Bordeaux. They booed the names of several players when it was being announced on PA, including Messi. There were also whistles and jeers when the Argentine and Neymar stood over a freekick.
Fabregas, who currently represents AS Monaco, snapped at those supporters and told them that they should be grateful Messi is wearing their colours.
“They justify that try get paid a lot, they lost against Real Madrid, that’s fine, but didn’t they want to win? That’s what comes first,”
the 34-year-old told Marca.
“With PSG they haven’t won anything yet, for the moment, but they will surely win the league. You’re talking about a player [Messi] who has just arrived. PSG have never had a player like this in their lives. It’s better to be grateful, to support him and not crush him. This year or next, these guys will bring you great moments.”
The Spaniard, himself, has been on the receiving end of this behaviour from fans during his time at Barcelona. He went on to describe the scenes as being ‘very ugly’.
“I have been whistled at the Camp Nou. I know what happened with PSG. The fans want to create a moment of tension with the players.
During the match they support you, when they sing your name, perfect, but what I saw the other day, jeering when Neymar lost the ball or whistling when they touched the ball, is very ugly,”
he explained.
