Carrying a 2-0 aggregate lead with them back to Anfield, Liverpool looked to finish off their UEFA Champions League Round-of-16 tie against Inter Milan as quickly as possible. However, the two teams split the first half in terms of chances, with Joel Matip rattling the bar at one end and Hakan Calhanoglu drawing a save out of Alisson at the other.
Mohamed Salah hit both the posts after the interval, however, sandwiched between the two efforts were two key moments, which, at first, swung the momentum in favor of the Italian champions and then back to Liverpool. Inter cut the deficit by one in the 61st minute through Lautaro Martinez – the striker rifled the ball into the top corner from outside the box.
Seconds later, though, Alexis Sanchez went in for a sliding tackle to win the ball but caught Fabinho with his studs up on the follow-through, thus earning a second yellow card. The man advantage helped Liverpool see out the game without any further difficulties and progress to the quarterfinals.
RB Salzburg came away with a respectable draw against Bayern Munich from the first leg three weeks ago. However, twenty-three minutes into the second, the Austrian side trailed the German by three goals to nil – all of which were scored by Robert Lewandowski. Serge Gnabry put the Bavarians four-nil up on the night, and five-one on aggregate, in the 31st minute, and the lead was compounded further by Thomas Muller after the interval.
Maurits Kjaergaard pulled a goal back for Salzburg in the 70th minute, running onto a Brenden Aaronson pass and smashing the ball in at the near post. However, Bayern continued their rout on the other side of the concession, with Muller grabbing his second and Leroy Sane capping off the scoring with a thumping, close-range finish. Eight-two the tie finished in favor of the 2019/20 Champions League winners.
