The Reds want Mohamed Salah to commit his long-term future to the club, but the Egyptian is unwilling to accept the offer on the table – he wants more. The talks between the club and the player over the renewal of his contract have broken down, reports Fabrizio Romano.
The last time Salah’s representatives and the club were in contact was in December, with the former unwilling to accept the offer on the table presented by the latter. Manager Jurgen Klopp hinted at the same in a recent media appearance, claiming that the ball is now in Salah’s court. The German also claimed that the club was in no rush and was waiting on Salah to make his decision.
“I think Mo definitely expects this club to be ambitious and we are. It’s Mo’s decision. The club did what it can do. It is all fine. All fine from my point of view. Nothing has happened further, no signing, no rejection, we just have to wait. Completely fine, no rush,”
he said.
Salah is presently earning in the ballpark of a 200,000 pounds-a-week figure at Liverpool, which in itself doesn’t make him the highest earner at the club. According to Marca, the Egypt international is looking for pay parity with some of the league’s top earners, landing his demands in the region of 400,000 pounds-a-week.
Worryingly for Liverpool, Salah’s contract expires in 2023. This implies that the club has until next January to get him to sign fresh terms or risk losing him to another team on a pre-contract. Furthermore, in a scenario in which the club and the player can’t agree to terms, the former has only two windows to sell the latter.
The 29-year-old has been one of the league’s best players in the last half-decade. Having signed for Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017, Salah has made 238 appearances for the Reds and has scored 153 goals. During this time, he won a Premier League, a Champions League, and an EFL Cup.
