An announcement that has been coming; Major League Soccer side New England Revolution have confirmed the sale of goalkeeper Matt Turner to Arsenal. Turner will join the Gunners in June, ahead of the new season.
The Premier League side will pay New England a reported 10 million dollars for Turner’s services – the player will join the club in June, ahead of the new season. A statement from the custodian’s current employers confirmed the same:
“The New England Revolution have agreed to terms for goalkeeper Matt Turner to join Arsenal of the English Premier League in a summer transfer for an undisclosed fee pending completion of a medical.
“Turner, the 2021 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, is expected to join Arsenal in late June 2022, allowing the United States international to remain with New England through the entirety of the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League campaign and nearly half of the 2022 MLS regular season.”
Turner, the 27-year-old United States of American international, started his career with college side Farfield Flags, before transferring to the now-defunct Premier Development League – the fourth tier of USA’s football pyramid – outfit Jersey Express SC in 2014.
He would join New England in 2016 after completing a successful trial, despite remaining unpicked in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. He has since kept goal for the Revs on more than 100 occasions and has turned into a full-fledged international for his country.
The arrival of Turner could push Bernd Leno towards the exit. The German was Arsenal’s number one until the previous season, but the summer transfer of Aaron Ramsdale has pushed the custodian down in the pecking order.
With Ramsdale the undisputed number one for the Gunners in the league, the German has had his game-time restricted to the cups – he was also linked with a winter transfer to the free-spending Newcastle United.
The 29-year-old is contracted to Arsenal until 2023 but is expected to depart in the summer in search of first-team opportunities.
Turner, it is understood, will challenge Ramsdale for the top spot at Arsenal, starting from the 2022/23 season.
