Bruno Guimaraes was name-dropped as a long-term Arsenal target in a recent report. However, soon enough, rumours emerged of Newcastle United submitting an official bid for the 24-year-old midfielder to his club Olympique Lyonnais. A battle between the two is underway.
The Brazilian midfielder was name-dropped as one of Arsenal’s key targets in a recent report, but, by Tuesday night, Newcastle had surged ahead of the Gunners – by submitting an official bid for the player to Lyon.
As per The Athletic, the newly-rich Newcastle lodged a 40 million euros offer with Lyon for the Brazilian. An offer hasn’t been accepted as of yet, but the Magpies remain hopeful that an agreement can be reached with the Ligue 1 giants, as they believe their proposal to be within the realms of the asking club’s demands.
Furthermore, the report states the player himself is keen on the move, one that would conclude his journey from the Brazilian fourth tier to the Premier League in six years, and will undergo a medical in Ecuador before finalizing the transfer.
On the contrary, reports early on Wednesday morning indicated that the transfer might not be a foregone conclusion just yet. After their endeavors to take Juventus midfielder Arthur on loan for the remainder of the season hit a wall, Arsenal, themselves, have turned to Guimaraes.
As per RMC, the North London outfit has initiated a dialogue with the relevant representatives again, although they are yet to submit a formal bid for the player. Moreover, the new report also states that Guimaraes is yet to give his approval to Newcastle, owing to interest from Arsenal – and Juve – and will make a decision over his future shortly.
Lyon, meanwhile, stand to double their profit on Guimaraes should the player complete a move away during the concurrent transfer window. The Ligue 1 side signed him for a relatively huge fee of 20 million euros from Athletico Paranaense in January 2020 – half of what they are expected to receive if the transfer goes through.
